Blacksmiths Swim Repeats - it’s a beauty!
Sunday, April 13: 8:30am
We swim around 1, 2 or 3 buoys set 150 metres off the beach!
First swim is a warm-up around 1 buoy (300 metres return), 2 buoys (400 metres) or 3 buoys (500 metres).
We do 6 - 8 swims total with options for slower, intermediate & faster swimmers as above. Inshort, slower swimmers swim shorter & faster swimmers swim further.
We rest for a 2 - 3 minutes after each swim & go again! Everyone starts together & heads towards buoy #1. If you have overcooked it simply sit one out!
Minimum SAFETY standard? You need to be able to swim 1km non-stop freestyle (without flippers) to do this swim. Ideally you have attended one of our rookie swims. If not, please be aware that Coach Spot will be directing the swims from out the back on his SUP or on the beach & NOT necessarily at the back with the slower swimmers.
Why do this? This is the single best swim we offer to get into shape - it is painful but very rewarding!
We swim parallel to the beach - never more than 20 - 30 metres from shore!
Salts Bay Monthly Swims: swim heads west for 500 metres and back (1km total) with 2 turnaround buoys.
Next one: April 27
Minimum Safety Standard: 1km non-stop freestyle.
Water Safety: Coach Spot on his SUP & paddler(s) on board(s)
Rookie 1km swim: 1 lap of 1km course or 2km swim: 2 laps of 1km course
3km or 4km swim: 3 - 4 laps of 1km course.
Please be early - make sure you are there 15 minutes before start.

Who for? For people new to open water swimming, scared of the open water or just to refresh before doing an open water squad. Make sure you can swim 500 metres non-stop freestyle as this is our safety standard. This should be done in a pool (no flippers) & if you can, please give Coach Spot a time.
Other Swims? For experienced swimmers we have an earlier Open Water Enduro Swim (2 - 4km+ total over our 500 metre course). Timetable/ Bookings here
Here’s how it works…
1. We do an intro chat with Coach Spot going through open water basics.
- how to get in the water & at what speed to start swimming so you pace yourself correctly.
- learn to navigate. Coach will show you some lift & look tips so you swim in a straight line.
- learn to swim with other people around you just like an ocean swim or triathlon without panicking.
- chill out tips in case you panic!
2. We do a short warm up swim in shallow water parallel to the beach to give you confidence. Coach Spot is on his Stand Up Paddle Board to ease your fears.
3. We do 1 or more swim loop(s) of a 200 metres around 2 marker buoys to give you some deeper water experience & confidence. We repeat this a second time to practice our new skills. Coach Spot is on his Stand Up Paddle Board to ease your fears.
4. We swim a deeper water longer swim loop (400 - 500 metres) with 2 or 3 markers buoys to conquer your fears! Coach Spot stays at the back during this swim on his Stand Up Paddleboard so you simply have to hold onto the board to get your breath back if you get scared. We repeat this swim at a faster speed!
What you need to do:
1. Make sure you can swim 500 metres non-stop freestyle as this is our safety standard. This should be done in a pool (no flippers) & if you can, please give Coach Spot a time.
2. Register online asap here - it’s important that we know you are coming in advance. Reminder we have a swim for experienced swimmers at 8am with timetable link here
3. Arrive early to the venue - usually Coach Spot will be running a squad so come & check out what the more experienced swimmers are doing.
4. Make sure you have a swim cap, goggles & swimmers. Some people wear wetsuits even when it’s warm. If you have one & are comfortable in it feel free to wear it. Wetsuits help you float so are a good option IF you are comfortable in it.
